MURFREESBORO, NC – After suffering an 8-1 setback to Chowan Saturday, the Shaw University women's tennis team recovered nicely with a 9-0 sweep of Virginia State University Sunday morning in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matchup at the Rose Family Tennis Complex.
Shaw now stands 10-2 on the season and 6-1 against CIAA opponents while the Trojans fall to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.
Doubles play was all Shaw, with wins coming from the duos Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Canada) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon), Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) and Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade). With the doubles victories, Vanko and Kamegne improve to 9-1 against their opponents this season.
The Lady Bears also dominated singles play, picking up wins from Vanko, Kamegne, Jovanovic, Martic, Aleema and Fekete. Fekete won her fifth-straight singles. She has not loss since Mar. 3 against North Greenville and improves to 6-2 on the season.
Shaw will now travel to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson C. Smith University on Tuesday, Mar. 28 for a CIAA division contest slated for 2 p.m.
