MURFREESBORO, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis team fell to Chowan University by the score of 8-1, Saturday morning in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matchup at the Rose Family Tennis Complex. The loss snapped the Lady Bears (9-2, 5-1 CIAA) win-streak of seven games, giving Shaw its first conference setback on the season.

In a very tight battle, Shaw was swept in doubles play for the first time this season. Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Canada) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) fell 8-5 at the No. 1 doubles, following Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) who also suffered an 8-5 loss at the second line. Then Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) battled tough but suffered an 8-6 loss to conclude doubles action.

Fekete came away with the sole victory from the morning, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles.

At the No. 1 flight Vanko suffered a 6-4, 6-4, 5-10 decision, while Jovanovic was dealt a 6-3, 6-2 match at the No. 2 spot. Both Kamegne and Martic dropped a 6-2, 6-1 frame before Aleem kept it close, losing 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Shaw will look to recover with a contest versus Virginia State Sunday, Mar. 26 in Murfreesboro, NC at 10 a.m.
