LADY BEARS SLAY WINSTON-SALEM STATE IN WOMEN'S TENNIS

RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis got off to a great start in division play thanks to devouring  9-0 victory over the Rams of Winston-Salem State University (2-5, 1-3 CIAA, 1-1 Southern Division) Friday afternoon in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest at Worthdale Park.

 

Shaw (7-1, 3-0 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as the Lady Bears won all three doubles by the scores of 8-0.

 

In addition, the Lady Bears were also dominant in singles play. Daneila Vanko (Montreal, Canada) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles while Toedora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) did not surrender in either match, recording a 7-5, 6-1 win in the second flight.

 

Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 slot, following Andrijana Martin (Belgrade, Serbia), Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) all claiming 6-0, 6-0 victories at flights four, five and six.

 

The win today marked the Lady Bears fifth-consecutive. Shaw will return to action Monday, Mar. 20 when they host Livingstone College also in a Southern Division contest at Worthdale Park. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
