MURFREESBORO, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis team swept Virginia State University (6-2, 6-2 CIAA) on Sunday morning for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) crossover matchup. The contest was a makeup match due to inclement weather originally scheduled for March 20.
The Lady Bears (12-2, 10-1 CIAA) started off strong when they clinched the doubles point. Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) and Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) teamed up at the No. 1 position to take on Sheila James and Sydney Yao and topped them 8-2.
At the No. 2 position, Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) defeated Tamisha Richardson and Majhanae Thomas 8-0 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) notched the first win for Shaw at No. 5, a 6-0, 6-1 win over Annessa Taylor. Ruzir defeated Yao, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot before Jovanovic clinched a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory over James.
Martic concluded the day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Thomas.
Shaw will return to action on April 10 as they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face Winston-Salem State University for a divisional matchup. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
