RALEIGH, NC. – The Shaw University women's tennis team scored a 5-0 victory Friday afternoon over Virginia State University in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Semifinal match played at Millbrook Exchange Center. The Lady Bears advance to the championship match and will face the Hawks of Chowan University at 10 a.m.
In doubles action, CIAA Player of the Year Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) and All-CIAA Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) turned in an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles before All-CIAA Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Anadrijana Martic (Belgrade) also grabbed an 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles. Shaw would lead 2-0 heading into singles action.
The Lady Bears dominated the bottom of the lineup after Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) collected a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 5 slot. Shaw secured two more wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles to take the match win, 5-0 over the Trojans.
Shaw will look to defend its crown and avenge the Hawks in the championship match. CU gave the Lady Bears its only loss in the conference back on March 19, with a score of 5-4.
