WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis team extended its win-streak to four games after defeating Winston-Salem State University, 7-2 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest on Sunday afternoon.
Doubles competition saw the Lady Bears (13-2, 11-1 CIAA) earn wins in the first and second slots. Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) and Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) defeated Gabrielle Lindsay and Aja Grant in the top spot by a score of 8-2, while the second flight duo of Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) took down Alexus Morgan and Devan Corpening, 8-1.
WSSU (6-7, 6-5 CIAA) earned the win at No. 3 due to default but Shaw had a 2-1 lead headed into singles play.
Shaw rolled through singles play, taking five of the six flights to pull out the win on the afternoon. Ruzir took home the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Morgan by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Jovanovic pulled out a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Lindsay at the No. 2.
Kamegne made easy work of her opponent Grant (6-0, 6-1) in the third flight, while Martic earned a win over Corpening 6-1, 6-2 before Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) defeated Miranda Legg, 6-0, 6-0.
Shaw will return to action on April 12 as they face Fayetteville State University for a divisional matchup. First serve is slated for 1 p.m at Lions Park.
