RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis dropped its first conference match of the season, falling 5-4 to Northern Division foe Chowan University Saturday in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-up hosted by the Hawks.
The setback snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Lady Bears as they post a 9-2 overall record and 7-1 mark in the league. The Hawks improve to 13-3 on the season and hold a 5-0 record in league action.
Shaw won two of three in doubles, getting an 9-8 win at No. 1 from Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) and Teodora Jovanovic (Nis Serbia). Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) notched an 8-3 win at the No. 2 doubles before a forfeiting the No. 3 slot.
In singles, Ruzir and Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) won at No. 1 and 5 singles, while the Hawks battled back for a three victories at the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots.
A match originally scheduled for Sunday against Virginia State has been postponed. Shaw will return to action on March 31 when they travel to Livingstone for a Southern Division contest at 1 p.m.
