BEARS DROP 23-12 DECISION AT LIVINGSTONE

Box Score

SALISBURY, NC – The Shaw University football team was saddled with a 23-12 loss by Livingstone College on Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Stadium. Shaw falls to 0-7 on the year while LC improves to 2-5 on the season.

With the loss, Shaw is now 0-4 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the Southern Division while Livingstone stands 1-3 in the league and 1-1 in the division.

The Blue Bears opened the game with a touchdown in the first quarter after producing 14 plays for 88 yards at the 4:08 mark.

Shaw responded with a drive of its own as quarterback Timothy Abbott (Washington, DC) found receivers Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) and Karocqus Jefferson (Williamston, SC) for three of the Bears first downs which would eventually allow running back Uriah Bethea (Upper Marlboro, MD) to score a one yard touchdown but Shaw's extra field goal attempt was blocked leaving the Bears trailing with 14:54 showing on the game clock in the second frame.

The following drive, LC punched in a 26-yard field goal to stretch its lead 10-6 at the 9:25 mark before a Bears interception led to an 11 play drive for 73 yards for a Blue Bears touchdown. After a good PAT for Livingstone, Shaw went to the locker room with a 17-6 disadvantage.

In the third quarter, LC's Jarius Richardson scored a 45-yard touchdown but the extra point attempt was no good as Shaw trailed 23-6 with 14:21 left.

Shaw was never able to get anything going offensively in the third and in the fourth quarter running back Tevin Perry (Bunn, NC) scored his first career touchdown off a two yard rush with 1:01 remaining in the contest. The Bears went for a two-point conversion but Abbott was tackled at the line of scrimmage therefore, turning the ball over to LC for the final seconds of the contest.

For the game, Shaw produced 319 total offense, including 185 through the air and 134 on the ground. The Bears accounted for 11 penalties worth 147 yards and turned the ball over twice.

Abbott finished the game 18-for-32 in pass completions for 178 yards but tossed two interceptions. He also led the Bears with seven carries for 52 yards. Long grabbed seven catches for 74 yards and Jefferson pulled in four receptions for 40 yards.

Defensively, Dominique Hannibal (Chesapeake, VA) led the team with a career-high 18 total tackles, four tackle for losses and two sacks, while Keelan Jones (Kansas City, MO) and Rashad Mosley (Bessemer, AL) added 13 and 10 tackles, respectively.

Shaw will return home to host Johnson C. Smith on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. in Durham County Memorial Stadium.
