Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – Saturday's Homecoming game started out cloudy and rainy and ended with ominous clouds and light showers as the Shaw University football team was ultimately unable to close its comeback effort losing 31-24 to cross-town rival, Saint Augustine's University at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
20 seniors were honored with family and friends before the contest. Among the seniors were Raheem Bramwell (Bronx, NY), Marquis Burrell (Bronx, NY), Kendall Evans (Temple Hills, MD), Terrance Evans (Winston-Salem, NC), Tranier Fraiser (Florence, SC), Tavarjia Fuller (Clinton, SC), Roland Green (Bluffton, SC), Marquise Grizzle (Camden, NC), Odie Harris (Houston, TX), Derrick Herring (Statesville, NC), Atravius James (College Park, GA),Keelan Jones (Kansas City, MO), Jerrel Jordan (Brandywine, MD), Myles Quimby (Raleigh, NC), Quenton Rucker (Atlanta, GA), Sheldon Saddler (Kannapolis, NC), Brian Smallwood, Jr. (Charlotte, NC), Thomas Street, Jr. (Compton, CA), Danny Webster, Jr. (New Bern, NC) and Moses White (Gordan Heights, NY).
The loss dropped the Bears to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Falcons got their first win on the season as they improved to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the CIAA.
Shaw came into the contest with a fairly decent attack that averaged 212 yards through the air and 207 on the ground. Freshman quarterback Terrence Shambry, II (Chesapeake, VA) rushed for a career-high 102 yards on the afternoon. He also threw for 212 yards, completing 19-of-34 passes and four interceptions.
Senior running back Grizzle finished the day with 77 yards off of 20 carries, while sophomore Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) had a 10 catches for a season-high 122 yards and senior wide receiver Webster, Jr. (New Bern, NC) had five receptions for 66 yards.
On the Bears first offensive possession, Shambry, II's pass was intercepted by Darius Cole who ran into the end zone for a 31 yard touchdown to give the Falcons the early 7-0 lead at the 13:43 mark.
The Bears would cut the deficit after freshman Joe Nguyen (Charlotte, NC) kicked a good field from 35 yards out but SAU responded with a field goal of their own with a 34 yard field goal from Sean Smith with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
As 39 seconds showed remaining in the second quarter, SAU's Roderick Davenport, II gave the Falcons a 14-point lead off a one-yard rush in the end zone as the Bears went into intermission trailing 17-3.
In the third quarter, SU managed a 12 yard play for 58 yards as Grizzle scored a touchdown with 7:07 remaining, followed by a good extra-point from Nguyen to chop at the Falcons lead 17-10.
The Falcons scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a 40-yard interception return by Denzel Watkins to stretch SAU's lead to 31-17 with 8:35 left. However, the Bears would not hang their heads just yet after Grizzle scored two more touchdowns for a total of 11 yards to cut the lead 31-24 but unfortunately, the game clock would run out on SU.
On defense, the Bears recorded 15 tackles for loss overall. Linebacker Green paced the unit with a game-high 13 tackles. He added four tackles for loss and three sacks. Linebacker White was next on the team with nine tackles and three tackles for loss.
