Lady Bear Tennis Downs Fayetteville State 6-3

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University women's tennis team downed visiting Fayetteville State 6-3 in a match played at Biltmore Hills Park Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Bears, short a player, defaulted both the number six singles and the number three doubles.  FSU also claimed a victory at number five singles when the Shaw player retired because of injury.

Shaw swept the remaining matches to claim the win.

At number one doubles, Claudia Silva and Gislaine Farias downed Taylor Norris and Samantha Ledbetter 8-0.  Jessica Medina and Menel Ben-Cheikh also claimed an 8-0 sweep over Selena Cox and Vanaysha Graham.

At numbers one, two and three singles, Silva, Medina and Farias claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins over their opponents while Ben-Cheikh won 6-0, 6-1.

The win improves Shaw's record to 10-3 overall, 8-2 in the CIAA.  FSU drops to 3-6 overall and in the conference.

Shaw returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Coker for a 2:00 p.m. match.  They return home on Sunday to take part in the CIAA-Mountain East Roundup, which begins action at 10:00 a.m.  Bluefield State, Charleston (WV) and Winston-Salem State are taking part in the event.
