Last Minute Touchdown Lifts Chowan Past Shaw 29-23

Box Score

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - A last minute touchdown propelled Chowan past Shaw 29-23 in a game played Saturday night at Garrison Stadium on the Chowan campus.

Shaw (2-2, 0-1 CIAA) was plagued by penalties, committing 10 fouls for 165 yards, including some that kept Chowan (2-2, 1-0 CIAA) drives alive.

"That's too much.  That's too much," said Shaw head coach Robert Massey.  "You can't win like that.  We shot ourselves in the foot with dumb penalties.  You can't win like that."

Missed tackles also hurt the Bears, as they had Chowan's Anthony Clanton tackled inside the ten, but he broke free and took the ball to the Chowan 26 and out of the shadow of the Chowan goal post.  While Chowan was forced to punt later in the drive, it shifted the battle for field position and led to the final score.

"We had poor effort on that drive -- on that play," said Massey.  "Our player said the kid was out of bounds,  But we've got to stop refereeing and just play.  And that's what happened."

On the next Chowan drive, started on Shaw's side of the field, Cameron Stover hit Antjuan Randall for 16 yards and the winning touchdown with 23 seconds left on the clock.

Massey said the penalties and missed tackles were part of a larger problem.  "We aren't concentrating on the small things.  That's what it is.  The penalties, the poor tackling and the missed assignments offensively are all things we need to focus on."

The loss to Chowan marks the second straight game that Shaw has struggled offensively -- after starting off the season with 400-plus yard performances in the first two games.  Saturday night, the Bears managed only 326 yards.

"We're banged up, but that's not an excuse,"  Massey said.  "We have to go back to doing what we did those first two games.  We've got to shore up the running game.  If you can control the ground game, you can open up things in the passing game."

Shaw got on the scoreboard early.  After the defense held Chowan to a single yard on their first drive, Shaw took over the ball on their own 29.  After advancing to the 40, Quinshon Odom hit Ta'Juan Brown for a 60-yard pass.  Shaw missed the PAT, but led 6-0.

On their next drive, Chowan started on their own 31, but an Anthony Clanton rush for 23 yards moved them into Shaw territory.  Clanton added two more rushes in the drive, including a 12 yard dash that put them in the end zone.  After the successful PAT, the Hawks led 7-6.

As the first quarter came to an end, Shaw was mid-drive, and continued into the second quarter.  On the drive, Marquise Grizzle rushed nine times, ending with a one-yard dive into the end zone that gave Shaw the 13-7 advantage.  Neither team would cross the goal line again in the first half.

The third quarter would prove to be the offensively active one for both teams.  After Odom threw an interception on the second play of the half, the Hawks had the ball at the Shaw 34.  Chowan rushed four times, ending with a DaSean Martin four-yard run to give the Hawks a 14-13 lead.

They extended their lead to 21-13 on their next drive.  Stover hit two passes and the Bears committed a rushing the passer penalty to move the Hawks to the Shaw 6.  Stover then hit Holland for six yards and a 21-13 lead.

Shaw rallied on their next drive, with Odom hitting Kowaski Kitchens for a key 17-yard pass, and Terrance Allford moving the Bears on the ground.  The drive stalled at the Chowan 23 and Andres Magallon hit a 41-yard field goal to trim the Chowan lead to 21-16.

Chowan's next drive ended when Shaw's Chris Ellerbe picked off a Stover pass.  Grizzle and Odom ate away at yards, but then Odom found David Jordan on the left sideline and Jordan took it into the end zone for a 51-yard touchdown play and a 23-21 Shaw lead with eight seconds left in the third.

In the fourth, the two teams exchanged blows, but neither team made it into the red zone, until Chowan got the ball on the Shaw 48 with 2:43 left to play.  Stover opened the drive with a 16-yard strike to Holland, then continued to carve up the field.  After successfully converting a fourth-and-15, Stover found Randall a 16-yard strike for a touchdown.  The Hawks then converted the two-point play to give the Hawks a 29-23 lead with 17 seconds left on the clock.

Shaw took two long shots at the end zone -- and a delay of game penalty -- to close out the game.

Shaw finished the game with 326 yards on 85 plays, including 141 yards on the ground.  Chowan had 384 yards on 76 plays, including 161 on the ground.

Odom finished the game with 185 yards on a 15-for-37 performance.  He threw two touchdowns and two interceptions.  He was sacked four times.

Grizzle led Shaw rushers with 124 yards on 29 attempts and one touchdown.  Kowaski Kitchens was the leading receiver for the Bears with six catches for 92 yards.

Darnell Evans continued to lead the Shaw defense with nine tackles and an interception.  He also had two tackles for a loss.  Walter Reed and Derrick Hannibal had five tackles apiece.  Chris Ellerbe had two interceptions.

Stover went 24 for 39 for 223 yards including two touchdowns and three interceptions.  He was sacked six times.  Holland was his leading receiver with seven catches for 60 yards and one touchdown.

Clanton finished the game with 65 yards on 12 rushes.  He had one touchdown.

Defensively for the Hawks, Jason Ampy had 11 tackles, including a tackle for a loss.  Dakorion Desamme had ten tackles including a sack and a tackle for a loss.

After three games away from Durham, the Bears return home next Saturday when they host Virginia State in a CIAA contest.  Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
