RALEIGH, N.C. — The Shaw University women's tennis team continued undefeated in CIAA play after defeating Winston-Salem State 6-3 in matches played at Biltmore Hills Park Monday afternoon.
With the win, Shaw improves to 11-0 in the CIAA and 16-2 overall.
The competition began with doubles action and both of Shaw's top two doubles teams captured wins. Jessica Medina and Michelle Hart downed Sloane Holmes and Kayla Carter 8-4 in the top slot. At number two doubles, Claudia Silva and Gislaine Farias defeated Bianka Locklear and Kalin Jarvis 8-5. Shaw's lone doubles loss came at number three doubles where Desiree Bell and Menel Ben-Chiekh fell to Taylor Harris and Carmen Grady 8-0.
At number one singles, Silva down Holmes 6-3, 6-0, while Medina defeated Locklear 6-2, 6-0 in the number two slot.
The closest contest of the afternoon came at number three singles. Hart claimed the first set over Carter 7-5, but fell in the second 6-1. She then captured the tiebreaker 10-7.
Gislaine Farias claimed Shaw's final point of the afternoon, downing Jarvis 6-2, 6-0.
The Lady Bears return to action Tuesday when they travel to Richmond, Va., for a CIAA cross-divisional roundup. They will face Virginia Union at 9:00 a.m. and Bowie State at 3:00 p.m. They return home Thursday to close out CIAA play for the season with a pair of contests against Fayetteville State. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Biltmore Hills Park.
