RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University women's tennis team downed Division I North Carolina A&T 6-3 in matches played Wednesday afternoon at Biltmore Hills Park. With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 7-2 on the season.
The match of the afternoon was the battle at number one singles as A&T's Kimberly Stalling forced a third set against Shaw's Claudia Silva, before falling 6-0, 6-7 and 10-1 in the tie breaker.
Shaw's two through four singles players won their matches with comparative ease. In the number two spot, Jessica Medina downed Jayla Scott 6-2, 6-1. Michelle Hart and Gislaine Farias also won their matches in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
Takeyrah Reid got the only contested win for the Aggies, defeating Menel Bencheikh 6-1, 6-1. Shaw's other losses came off a manpower shortage as they were forced to forfeit both the number three doubles and the number six singles because they were a player short.
Shaw returns to action Thursday in a CIAA tennis roundup at Fayetteville State. Game times have yet to be announced.
