MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team went 3-0 during the weekend's CIAA roundup that took place at Chowan University.
The Lady Bears defeated Virginia State 5-4 on Friday afternoon. They defeated Chowan and Elizabeth City State in both of their matches on Saturday afternoon at the Hawks Tennis Complex.
In their victory over VSU, the Lady Bears had three players pick up victories in singles action. Claudia Silva won her match in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-1. Jessica Medina took home a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Gislaine Farias earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory for the Lady Bears.
In doubles, the team of Silva and Farias defeated the VSU team of Zaire Simmons and Amanda Spencer, 8-4. Michelle Hart teamed up with Medina to beat the VSU duo of Brittany Uzzell and Nakesha Harry, 8-2.
The top four seeds (Silva, Medina, Hart and Farias) picked up straight-set victories in singles action in Shaw's victory over Chowan. Silva earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Chowan's Nata Kamenshchikova. Medina defeated Breanne Johnson 6-2, 7-6. Hart earned a shutout win (6-0, 6-0) over CU's Holly Egnor. Farias edged Jessica De Backre 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, Medina and Hart downed Kamenshchikova and Egnor 8-1. Silva and Farias defeated Chowan's team of Johnson and Straffai Cleveland 8-2.
In their 5-0 shutout of Elizabeth City State, the Lady Bears had singles wins from Medina, Farias and Desiree Bell, who all won their matches 8-0. Shaw's Menel Ben-Cheikh won via forfeit after ECSU didn't have a sixth-seeded singles player.
In doubles, Bell and Ben-Cheikh won their match via forfeit, allowing the Lady Bears to pick up the victory.
