RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University women's tennis team opened its season with a smooth victory over Livingstone in matches played Thursday afternoon at Biltmore Hills Park.
Shaw won every match contested - forfeiting the sixth singles and third doubles matches because they were missing a player.
The Lady Bears lost a total of eight games over all seven contested matches - all at the number five singles slot where Desiree Bell defeated Livingstone's Miracle Wigfall 6-4, 6-4.
Claudia Silva, Jessica Medina, Michelle Hart and Gislaine Farias all won their singles matches (one through four, respectively) by 6-0, 6-0 margins.
In doubles, Medina and Hart combined at number one doubles to down Corbin Bennett and Garreesa Henry 8-0. Silva and Farias defeated Shannon Davis and Natalia Felix by an identical 8-0 score.
The Lady Bears return to action Saturday when they and the Shaw men's tennis team travel to Johnson C. Smith for a key CIAA matchup. Matches begin at 1:00 p.m.
