DURHAM, N.C. - Shaw University's defense allowed only one offensive touchdown and the Bears got 253 all-purpose yards from Marquise Grizzle as they downed cross-town rival Saint Augustine's 32-14 Saturday afternoon at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
With the win, Shaw finishes its season 6-4, 4-3 in the CIAA. Saint Augustine's falls to 4-6, 3-4 in the conference.
The Shaw defense held Saint Augustine's to only 198 total yards, while Shaw rolled up 511 yards.
"We played well today on defense," said Shaw head coach Robert Massey. "It was a good all around effort and it felt good to get this one and send the seniors out on the right note."
Prior to the game, Shaw honored 19 seniors as part of the Senior Day activities. Perhaps no senior had a brighter career than cornerback Darnell Evans, who ended his Shaw career as the school's career interception leader. He put an exclamation point on his career hauling in one today -- giving him a nation-leading 11 for the season.
"He's a very special young man and has a special story to tell," said Massey. "He started as a walk on and now is the career interception leader. I think he's got what it takes to make it to the NFL. He's got the skills and all the intangibles. They'll try to say he's too small, but I've seen smaller out there. It's been an honor to coach him."
In addition to his interception, Evans finished the game with a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and a tackle.
Ta'Juan Brown, one of the Shaw seniors, opened the scoring on the game when he hauled in a 38-yard touchdown reception from Trevius Folston. The kick sailed wide, giving Shaw a 6-0 lead with 11:41 left in the first quarter.
Saint Augustine's threatened to build a drive on their next possession, but after moving the ball 31 yards, Cyril Davis' pass wound up in the arms of Shaw's N'Gal Tillman. Shaw was unable to mount a serious drive, but punted away to the Falcons.
On the first play of their drive, Saint Augustine's Cyrano Parsons fumbled and Evans recovered it and returned it for 17 yards to the Falcon 21 yard line. Shaw drove to the three, but could not punch it in, settling for an Andres Magallon 20-yard field goal for the 9-0 lead with 2:45 left in the quarter.
On the next possession, Davis had another pass intercepted -- this time by Evans, giving the Bears back the ball. The Bears only managed 12 yards, and the ensuing punt was blocked, giving Saint Aug the ball on the Shaw 19.
The Shaw defense held, forcing the Falcons to go for a field goal, but the 32-yard attempt went wide left, giving the Bears back the ball deep in their own territory.
Neither team managed to mount a real offensive threat until the Falcons got the ball with 5:32 left in the half. Davis went four of five on the drive, culminating in a 16-yard strike to Jordan Turkvant for the Saint Aug touchdown with 2:21 left in the half. The two teams would head to the locker room with Shaw holding the 9-7 lead.
Shaw, or more precisely, Grizzle came out hot in the second half. On the first possession, Grizzle ran for 30 yards, including a six-yard rush up the middle that gave Shaw a 16-7 lead with 10:16 left in the third.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jermaine Jones took the kick and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown, trimming the Shaw lead to 16-14. That would be all for the Falcons as the Shaw defense held them to only 78 yards the rest of the way.
Grizzle announced his presence as a receiver on Shaw's next drive, catching one pass for 15 yards, putting the ball at midfield, then after Shaw penalties, he caught another slant pass then ran over tacklers for 55 yards on the way to the end zone and a 23-14 Shaw lead.
After a Shaw drive stalled in Saint Aug territory, a strong punt pinned the Falcons back at their own eight-yard line. The Shaw defense powered through the Saint Augustine's line, with Darius Moffett sacking Davis in his end zone for a Shaw safety and a 25-14 lead.
The next Shaw drive rested on the arms and feet of Folston. He rushed four times, and was four-for-four passing, including a 15-yard lob to Brown for the 32-14 lead with 4:06 left in the game.
Saint Augustine's had two more drives on offense, but could not get closer than the Shaw 37, which is where they ended the game, giving Shaw the 32-14 final.
Folston was 19-for-32 for 315 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 54 yards.
Grizzle finished with two touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving - and 121 yards on the ground, 132 through the air. Brown finished with six catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Moffett finished the game with six tackles, including one for a sack and one and a half tackles for a loss. Strange had five tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack that gave him the Shaw single-season sack record with 8.5 on the season. Derrick Washington had five tackles and two pass breakups.
Pinkston was the leading rusher for Saint Augustine's with 32 yards on seven carries. Davis finished 17-for-31 with two interceptions for 158 yards and one touchdown. Jermaine Jones was the leading receiver with four catches for 43 yards.
Chaz Robinson was all over the field for the Falcons, finishing with 13 tackles, including one tackle for a loss and one block. Christopher Roberts had 11 tackles, including five and a half tackles for a loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
