LINCOLN, Pa. - The Shaw University volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games as they defeated Lincoln (PA) 3-0 and Virginia Union 3-1 in the first day of the CIAA Volleyball Roundup held on the campus of Lincoln.
The wins improve Shaw's record to 5-3 on the season and gives them wins in their first two conference matches. With the victories, Shaw already has more wins than they accumulated last season.
In the first match of the day, the Lady Bears defeated Lincoln by scores of 25-23, 25-9 and 25-13. Shashane Watson led Shaw with 12 kills, while Shaye Walton had eight. Crystal Gordon had three service aces, and Arielle Fairly had eight assists to lead the squad. Fairly and Watson had ten digs apiece.
Virginia Union took Shaw to four sets - and nearly a fifth - in the afternoon contest. Shaw dropped the first set to the Lady Trojans 25-18, but rebounded with three straight sets, 25-21, 25-22 and 27-25.
Watson again led the Lady Bears in kills, this time with 13, and Gordon had 12 kills. Courtnee Kelly led Shaw with 21 assists, while Quianna Myers had five service aces. Fairly had 12 digs while Watson had 11. Gordon had four blocks to lead the Lady Bears.
Shaw returns to action Sunday when they face Bowie State at 9:00 a.m. in their last match of the roundup. They return home Thursday, September 20 when they host Morris in a match at 6:00 p.m. at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
