Women's Tennis Sweeps Through Roundup Competition

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw women's tennis team swept through its six contests at the CIAA Divisional Roundup dropping only a single match to its competition.  Shaw defeated Saint Augustine's twice, then downed Winston-Salem State, Johnson C. Smith,  and Livingstone 9-0 in matches played at Biltmore Hills Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Fayetteville State captured the only match all weekend, but Shaw still prevailed 8-1 in the contest.

In the first match against Saint Aug, the Lady Bears did not lose a single set, sweeping all the matches 8-0.

In the second match against the Lady Falcons, Vimbai Mawisire, Gislaine Farias and Desiree Bell won their matches 8-0 while Claudia Silva and Aline Ferreira - both moving up two slots in the normal order - dropped a single game, winning 8-1.

Winston-Salem State provided the stiffest competition for the Lady Bears all weekend.

In doubles, the combination of Lolia Kienka and Jessica Medina downed Sloane Holmes and Kayla Carter 8-5.  Mawisire and Ferreira defeated Kalin Jarvis and Bianka Locklear 8-2.  At number three doubles, Silva and Farias brought home the dominant 8-1 win over Chelsea Chatman and Taylor Harris.

The only set the Lady Bears lost all weekend came at number one singles.  The Lady Rams' Holmes took Kienka to three sets.  Kienka dropped the first set 4-6, but then found her footing and took the second and third sets 6-0, 6-2.  All the other Lady Bears won their matches in straight sets.

Shaw had an easier time with Johnson C. Smith, sweeping all three doubles with 8-0 scores.  In singles, Kienka, Medina, and Ferreira all won their matches with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.  Silva took her match 6-1, 6-0; Mawisire won 6-0, 6-1 and Farias won 6-1, 6-1.

Against Fayetteville State, who had only five players, so defaulted on the number three doubles and the number six singles.  Shaw's only loss came at number five singles where FSU's Jasmine White defeated Sade Thomas 6-4, 6-2.

In the rest of the singles, Kienka defeated Varice Love 6-2, 6-0, Perez downed Brittney Williams 6-1, 6-0.  At number three singles, Silva downed Samantha Ledbetter 6-0, 6-0 and Mawisire, at number four singles, defeated M'Waka Thomas by the same 6-0, 6-0 count.

Shaw had little difficulty with Livingstone, sweeping all six singles with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.  In doubles, Kienka and Perez and Ferreira and Mawisire scored 8-0 wins while Thomas and Bell won 8-2.

The Lady Bears return to action Thursday when they travel to Charleston, WV, to take part in the CIAA/WVIAC Challenge.  They return hom Wednesday, April 11 to host Elizabeth City State.
