Volleyball Loses Large Lead, Falls to Saint Augustine's 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Lady Bears built a 2-0 lead, but fell 3-2 to Saint Augustine's in a match played at Emery Gymnasium Monday night.  The loss ends Shaw's season, while the Lady Falcons advance to the CIAA Tournament.  Shaw won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20, while the Lady Falcons won the final three sets 26-24, 25-22 and 16-14.

 

With the loss, Shaw drops to 10-17 overall, 5-11 in the CIAA and 3-7 in the Southern Division.  Saint Augustine's improves to 3-6 in the division, 6-9 in the conference and 6-20 overall with one match (against Fayetteville State) left on their schedule.

 

The first four sets were constant seesaw battles, with neither team showing a clear advantage.  In the first, the Lady Bears reeled off three straight points to take a 21-17 lead, then bounced to a 25-21 win.

 

Saint Augustine's ran off four straight points to open the second set, but Shaw answered with a 7-4 run to take a 14-12 lead.  While the Lady Falcons tied the score, they could never gain the upper hand and Shaw pulled out a 25-20 win.

 

The Lady Falcons broke out on top early in the third set, building a 5-1 lead.  Shaw tied the match at six-all, but Saint Aug reeled off four straight points to take a 10-6 lead.  Shaw pulled even at 11, and the two battled evenly until Shaw took a 23-22 lead off a Courtnee Kelly service ace.  Shaw held another lead at 24-23, but Saint Augustine's closed out the set with three straight points to claim the 26-24 win.

 

The Lady Falcons built a 17-11 lead in the fourth, but Shaw again battled back, this time tying the match at 21-all, but the Lady Bears could not get over the hump and Saint Aug closed out the set on a three-point run for the 25-22 win.

 

Shaw held a huge 9-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but but Cierra Neal ran off four straight service points to tie the score at nine.  Shaw reclaimed the lead on a kill by Crystal Gordon, but Saint Augustine's ran off three straight points to claim a 13-10 lead.

 

Sashane Watson's kill gave the service back to Shaw and cut the SAU lead to 13-11.  Gordon got two service points to tie the match at 13, but the Lady Falcons took advantage of a service error and closed out the set on a 3-1 run that gave them the 16-14 win and sent the packed gym full of fans rushing onto the court.

 

Gordon had 20 kills for the Lady Bears while Watson had 14 and Walton had 11.  Watson led the team with 16 digs, with Michelle Oliver adding 13 and Arielle Fairley picking up 11.  Kelly had 37 assists.

 

Victoria Davis led the Lady Falcons with 27 kills and Brittany Hicks added 12.  Chelsea Farrior had 18 digs, while Julieesa Thomas paced SAU with 42 assists.
