Lady Bears Take Doubleheader Against FSU, 7-2 and 7-2

(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw women's tennis team continued their CIAA unbeaten streak, stretching it to 14 matches with a doubleheader win over Fayetteville State by identical 7-2 scores.

The Lady Bears won all the contested matches, defaulting on one singles and one doubles match due to the absence of their number six singles player, who is also half of the number three doubles team.

With the win, Shaw's record moves to 17-4 overall and 14-0 within the conference. FSU falls to 3-13 and 2-11 in the CIAA. Shaw moves a game ahead of Virginia State (13-1 in conference) for the best record in the CIAA.

Shaw dominated FSU throughout both singles and doubles. In the ten singles matches played in the doubleheader, the Lady Bears lost only three games combined. In the four doubles matches, they lost only one.

Lolia Kienka, the 11th ranked singles player in the Atlantic region, did not drop a single game to Shantana Donegan, winning both matches 8-0. Fernanda Silva (above) and Livia Oliveira also swept their opponents 8-0.

Evan Okafor dropped only one game, winning 8-1 and 8-0 over Tiane Ellis, and Xania Steele dropped one game each match to Schanelle Ebanks to win 8-1 and 8-1.

Kienka and Okafor swept Donegan and Kristy Mitchell 8-0 in both of their doubles matches, while Silva and Oliveira dropped one game to Ellis and Amber Mitchell, winning 8-0 in the first match and 8-1 in the second.

The Lady Bears travel to Virginia Union on Thursday for a 1:00 match, and return home on Friday to host Chowan. They close the season Saturday at Virginia Union in a match that will likely decide the best record in the conference going into the Spring Championships.

Shaw plays its home tennis matches at Biltmore Hills Park, 2615 Fitzgerald Drive in Raleigh.
