(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw women's tennis team continued their undefeated CIAA season, handily defeating Western Division rival Johnson C. Smith 7-2. The Bears won the seven games played, but defaulted on a singles and doubles match because of an incomplete roster.
With the win, Shaw's record moves to 15-4 overall and 12-0 within the conference. JCSU falls to 11-3 within the CIAA, putting them two full games behind the Lady Bears in the Western Division. Shaw is in a virtual tie with Virginia State (12-1) for the best record in the conference.
Lolia Kienka (left), just named the 11th ranked singles player in the Atlantic region, easily defeated JCSU's Samantha Barnes 6-1, 6-0. She and partner Evan Okafor beat Rolanda Sue and Margaret Jones 8-1. Okafor defeated Jones 6-0, 6-2.
Shaw's number one doubles team, Fernanda Silva and Livia Oliveira, defeated Barnes and Jae Hargett 8-2. Silva defeated Hargett 6-0, 6-1 in singles, while Oliveira defeated Sue 6-0, 6-2.
Xania Steele defeated Camille Allen 6-2, 6-3 to round out the matches.
The Lady Bears host Fayetteville State Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Biltmore Hills Park, 2615 Fitzgerald Drive in Raleigh. On Thursday, they travel to travel to Virginia Union for a 1:00 match.
