Women Face First Loss of the Season to #39 Slippery Rock

(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of nationally ranked Slippery Rock 6-3. SRU is currently ranked 39th in the nation and third in the region. Lolia Kienka (Lagos, Nigeria - left) continued her unbeaten singles streak, downing Laura Handy 7-5, 0-6 (10-6 in the tiebreaker).

 

Evan Okafor (Lagos, Nigeria) and Xania Steele (Gaithersburg, MD) each reached a 3-1 season record with wins in the match. Okafor defeated Chelsea Gibson 6-4, 7-5. Steele (below) downed Jessica Hilborn 6-4, 3-6 (10-4).

 

The loss drops the Lady Bears to 3-1.

 

The Lady Bears next travel to Johnson C. Smith on Saturday for a 2:00 match. They return home on Sunday to play Shepherd at 2:00 p.m. Shaw's home matches are played at Biltmore Hills Park at 2615 Fitzgerald Drive.
