Bryce Bradley enters his first season as defensive coordinator for the Shaw University football program, bringing experience in defensive strategy, secondary development and player mentorship.
A Richmond, Virginia, native, Bradley has built his coaching career around developing disciplined, intelligent defensive backs while contributing to some of the top defensive units in NCAA Division II football. His background includes experience as a defensive pass game coordinator, safeties coach, defensive backs coach and graduate assistant at Virginia State University.
In 2024, Bradley served as Virginia State’s defensive pass game coordinator and safeties/nickels coach under head coach Henry Frazier III. In that role, he assisted with the coordination of coverage structures, opponent scouting, self-scout analysis, situational game planning and weekly film preparation. His work contributed to a Virginia State defense that ranked among the nation’s top units in several categories, including passing defense, turnover production and overall defensive efficiency.
Prior to taking on coordinator responsibilities, Bradley worked with the safeties and defensive backs at Virginia State, helping develop multiple All-Conference performers while preparing several student-athletes for opportunities at the FBS level. His approach in the secondary emphasized communication, leverage, disguise, eye discipline and leadership.
Bradley began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia State under former head coach Reggie Barlow. Working primarily with the outside linebackers, he assisted with film breakdown, opponent scouting, practice organization, special teams and player development within the Trojans’ 4-2-5 defensive system.
Before entering the coaching profession, Bradley was a four-year starter in the secondary at Virginia State. During his playing career, he saw action at free safety, strong safety and nickel, establishing himself as one of the program’s most versatile defensive players. His experience as a player continues to serve as a foundation for his teaching style and defensive philosophy.
Bradley earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Psychology from Virginia State University. He also earned a Master of Social Work degree specializing in Trauma-Informed Practice in May 2026.
His background in both coaching and social work has shaped a holistic approach to student-athlete development centered on leadership, accountability, resilience, communication and personal growth.
Bradley’s coaching philosophy is built on intentionality, preparation and consistency. He believes successful programs are developed through disciplined daily habits, strong relationships and consistent execution, with the ultimate goal of developing student-athletes into better football players, teammates, leaders and men.
