Shaw Volleyball Wraps Up Opening Weekend at Ram Rumble

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. — The Shaw University women's volleyball team opened the 2026 season with four matches at the Ram Rumble hosted by Shepherd University on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Bears opened Friday against Chestnut Hill, falling 3-1 despite claiming the third set 25-11. Leana Gould paced Shaw with 10 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while Justus Alexander finished with 19 assists and four service aces. Shaw totaled 16 aces in the match.

Later Friday, Shaw fell to host Shepherd in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22, 25-17. Kamaria Sanders led the Lady Bears with five kills, Alexander handed out 10 assists and Mary Barnes recorded four of Shaw's nine service aces.

Shaw returned Saturday with one of its strongest offensive performances of the weekend against Goldey-Beacom. The Lady Bears took the opening set 25-23 before falling 3-1. Gould finished with 11 kills and three aces, Sydni Hunter added nine kills while hitting .381 and Alexander dished out 29 assists. Shaw recorded 43 kills and 53 digs.

The Lady Bears closed the tournament against Frostburg State, falling 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. Gould led Shaw with eight kills, Taelin Connolley added six kills and 10 digs, and Alexander finished with 18 assists and seven digs.

Gould led Shaw across the four-match weekend with 32 kills, while Alexander totaled 76 assists.

Shaw returns to action Sept. 2 when the Lady Bears host Catawba inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
