Lady Bears Softball Come Up Short Against Chowan, ECSU in Twinbill

Game 1

MURFREESBORO, N.C. — Shaw University fell 9–2 to Chowan on Tuesday afternoon at the CU Softball Field, with a decisive six-run third inning proving too much to overcome.

Chowan built its advantage with a barrage of baserunners in the third inning, using walks, hit batters and timely contact to pull ahead. The Hawks added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Shaw (0–3) generated runs in the third and fifth, both aided by defensive miscues.

Shaw's offense was led by Savannah Ibarra, who recorded a hit, scored a run and stole a base, and Hailey Stanley, who also crossed the plate. Alyssa Gaucin produced the Bears' lone extra-base hit with a double.

Chowan's lineup applied steady pressure, combining aggressive baserunning with opportunistic hitting. The Hawks' starting pitcher tossed six innings and did not allow an earned run, scattering just two hits.

Shaw starter Syhia Marks threw 5.1 innings, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits while issuing five walks.

Shaw University produced 13 hits but was edged 8–7 by Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, surrendering a pivotal four-run fifth inning that shifted momentum to the Vikings.

ECSU opened with two runs in each of the first two innings before Shaw (0–4) mounted a response. The Bears plated three in the third and added additional runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 7–4 lead. ECSU answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on a series of timely hits and a key extra-base hit that tied the game and gave the Vikings the lead.

Shaw's offense was powered by Savannah Ibarra and Sierra Scott, both going 3-for-3. Scott doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run. Cyndia Dobbins added a two-run double, while Dakota Espinoza, Meagan Solomon and Alyssa Gaucin contributed key hits throughout the game. The Bears played error-free defensively.

ECSU's lineup relied on persistent contact, opportunistic baserunning and several multi-hit innings to overtake the Bears. The Vikings' pitcher went the distance, allowing 13 hits but issuing no walks.

Shaw used two pitchers: SeTara McGee, who worked the opening innings, and Mayeli Orozco, who entered in relief and was charged with the loss after the decisive fifth inning.
