DURHAM, N.C. -- The visiting Albany State Rams got off to a quick start and never looked back as they blew past the Shaw University Bears 51-7 Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Rams improved to 1-0 on the season while the Bears dropped to 0-1.
Christian Rutledge led all Bears rushers with 27 yards in the contest. Cobie also added 27 yards on the ground, averaging 5.4 yards per carry, as well as 65 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Shaw also got a significant contribution from Keyshaun Powell, who reeled in two catches for 32 yards.
Team paced the Shaw defensive effort, recording two recovered fumbles. Isman Alston added six tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack and Jeffrey McDonald had 0.5 TFL in the loss.
The Bears forced two turnovers in Saturday's contest, with Shaw turning those takeaways into seven points.
Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Albany State (GA) passing attack, holding the Golden Rams to 176 yards through the air.
How It Happened
Albany State (GA) jumped out to a 24-0 lead, but Shaw responded with 1:21 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 24-7 as Justin Wheeler found a wide open Cobie Bates from 33 yards out. Shaw didn't score again in the game and Albany State tacked on 27 more points to finish off the scoring.
