Lady Bears Fall Short at VUU

RICHMOND, VA - The Shaw women's basketball team got a 30-point performance from the bench, but fell 77-53 to the Virginia Union Panthers on the road Monday.

Keibra Hopkins led the Lady Bears (9-17, 6-10) with 10 points and two steals. Mahogany Collins also added four points and three blocks and Maiya Bumbray chipped in as well with eight points off the bench.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Virginia Union shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Collins' three rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.

How It Happened

Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 52-28 halftime deficit.

After intermission, Shaw cut its deficit to 56-35 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Collins, to trim its deficit to 56-40 with 5:45 to go in the third. Virginia Union countered and stretched its lead to 63-43 heading into the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

Virginia Union kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-43 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Bumbray's layup, to shrink the deficit to 68-48 with 4:40 to go in the contest. Virginia Union responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-53. Shaw took advantage of three Virginia Union turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
