Shaw University Bears Set to Open 2024 Football Season Against Elizabeth City State University

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University Bears are set to kick off their 2024 football season with a highly anticipated matchup against the Elizabeth City State University Vikings. The season opener will take place on Saturday, August 31. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM inside Durham County Memorial Statdium.

Game Overview

Shaw University, under the guidance of Head Coach Adrian Jones, enters the season with renewed energy and determination. After a rigorous off season of training and preparation, the Bears are eager to showcase their improved roster and strategies in front of their home crowd.

Elizabeth City State, a familiar opponent, brings its own set of challenges to the field. The Vikings, known for their strong defensive play and resilient rushing offense, will provide a tough test for Shaw in this early-season contest.

Key Matchups to Watch

  1. Shaw's Offensive Line vs. ECSU's Defensive Line:
The Bears offense will go as far as veteran signal caller Christian Peters takes them. When given time, he can use his arm strength along with his legs to pick apart the opponent's defense. Keeping him upright and mobile will be the key.

  2. ECSU's Ground Game vs. Shaw's Front Seven:
Elizabeth City State is expected to rely heavily on their ground game, testing the resolve of Shaw's defensive line and linebackers. The Bears' front seven, anchored by Saevion Gibbs, will be crucial in stopping the run and forcing the Vikings into passing situations.

  3. Special Teams Play:
Special teams could be the X-factor in this matchup. Both teams have shown strong capabilities in the return game, and a big play on special teams could swing the momentum.

Players to Watch

  • Ah'Shaan Belcher, WR: A dynamic playmaker for the Bears, Belcher is expected to be a key contributor on offense. His ability to stretch the field and make plays after the catch will be vital.

  • Zechariah Adams-Duckson , RB: The Vikings' star running back, Adams-Duckson, is a game-changer who can disrupt Shaw's offensive flow. His performance will be pivotal in ECSU's offensive strategy.

What's at Stake

For Shaw University, this game is not just the start of a new season; it's a statement opportunity. A win against Elizabeth City State would set the tone for the Bears' campaign, while also giving Shaw a season opening victory for the first time since 2013 when the Bears opened the season in dominating fashion beating Charleston (WV)

Elizabeth City State, on the other hand, is looking to spoil Shaw's home opener and begin their season with a statement of their own. The Vikings have lost three straight against the Bears and five of the last seven overall.
