ERIE, PA --Maelie Chupin and Amari Earl both put up double-doubles, but the Shaw volleyball team lost to the Gannon Golden Knights 3-1 (21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25) Thursday night in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament at Hagerty Family Events Center.
The loss ends Shaw season at 30-5 overall.Â
Things were looking as if a repeat of the Lady Bears historic upset over Wheeling might repeat itself as Shaw once again dropped the first two sets before capturing the third set and pushing the top seed to the limit on set four before a controversial call handed the match to the home team ending all hopes of a fifth set.Â
The Lady Bears were led by double-doubles from both Earl, who had 10 kills and 18 digs, and Chupin, who had 16 kills and 13 digs. Leanna Beaty also added eight kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kalia Morris chipped in for with 27 digs to go with five blocks from Beaty.

SET 1 | The Lady Bears couldn't endure a furious Gannon rally in the first set, falling 25-21 after leading by eight points at 11-3 earlier in the set.
SET 2 | A 25-21 second-set loss put Shaw behind 2-0 in the match. The Lady Bears lost the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Shaw fought back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the match in the third stanza. The Lady Bears persevered in a back-and-forth set to win 25-21 in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way. The Shaw offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Shaw's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Gannon attacks in the stanza.
SET 4 | The Lady Bears battled back from a seven-point hole at 20-13, but it wasn't enough as Gannon hung on to win the set after a point was awarded to the Lady Bears was overturned after a discussion from the officials led to a Gannon challenge over tuning the call on the floor.Â
