BOCA RATON, FL --The Shaw women's basketball team knocked down 5-of-12 attempts from three-point range, shooting 41.7 percent from deep in a 73-53 loss to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center Sunday.
The Lady Bears (4-8) had two players score in double figures, led by D'Ayzha Akinson, who had 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. Kaylee Milburn added 11 points and Maiya Bumbray added eight points.
Shaw forced 17 Palm Beach Atlantic turnovers. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into five points on the other end of the floor. Akinson's two steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 9-8 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 5:10 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 15-8. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage.
The Lady Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-24.
Palm Beach Atlantic continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-24 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Akinson, to trim its deficit to 35-29 with 8:58 to go in the third. Palm Beach Atlantic countered and stretched its lead to 56-43 heading into the fourth. Shaw turned three offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 19 total points in the quarter.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-53. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
