RALEIGH, NC --Naomi Winston-Ellis scored 20 points to help lead the Shaw women's basketball team past the Lincoln (PA) Lions 78-66 at home Thursday.
The Lady Bears (7-5, 2-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Winston-Ellis, who had 20 points and two steals. Alexis Radcliff tacked on 16 points and six rebounds and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes chipped in as well with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Shaw out-rebounded Lincoln (PA) 41-37 in Thursday's game, led by seven boards from Tre'Zha Muhammad. The Lady Bears also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points.
Shaw forced 16 Lincoln (PA) turnovers. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Camilla Barreno's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 18-17.
Lincoln (PA) kept adding to that lead, building a 24-21 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Barreno, to take a 26-24 lead. The Lady Bears kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 33-31 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
Shaw wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Winston-Ellis, to expand its lead further to 41-31 with 7:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 54-46 edge. Shaw knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Radcliff's layup, to grow the lead to 76-63 with 1:25 to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-66 win. Shaw took advantage of three Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
