DURHAM, North Carolina -- Kicker India Pulphus connected on her extra point attempt late in the fourth quarter to make history as the first female kicker to kick an extra point in Shaw football and CIAA football history Saturday afternoon as the Shaw Bears fell to the visiting Virginia State Trojans 38-19 inside Durham County Memorial Stadium.Â
The Trojans improved to 4-0 on the year and 3-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, while the Bears fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference matchups.
Sidney Gibbs paced the Bears rushing attack by accumulating 84 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game, averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Jatoine Fields also added 44 yards on the ground, averaging 4.4 yards per carry.
Ah'shaan Belcher reeled in five catches for 99 yards and one score.
Akeythio Carson led the Shaw defensive effort, totaling three tackles and one interception. Jalen Banks added one interception and Saevion Gibbs had five tackles, 3.0 TFL, and one sack in the loss.
The Bears forced two turnovers in Saturday's contest, with Shaw turning those takeaways into six points.
Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Virginia State rushing attack, holding the Trojans to 118 yards on the ground. The Bears defense disrupted the Virginia State passing game on the way to recording two interceptions.
Shaw's offense made the most of its trips to the red zone, scoring on three of its three trips, with all of those scores being touchdowns.
How It Happened
After Virginia State opened up a 14-0 lead, Shaw got on the board with 13:08 remaining in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 14-6.The Bears responded with a touchdown after Virginia State increased its lead to 35-6 to make it a 35-12 game.
Virginia State scored to increase their lead to 38-12 before Shaw answered with :52 left in the fourth quarter allowing Pulphus the opportunity to make history and narrowed the gap to 38-19. Both teams played the rest of the game without scoring.
