Shaw Splits Doubleheader Against Virginia Union

RICHMOND, VA -- The Shaw University softball team split a doubleheader against Virginia Union on Thursday, April 13. The Lady Bears bounced back from a 10-2 loss in the first game to defeat the Lady Panthers 19-12 in the second game.

The Lady Bears are now 4-6 in the CIAA and 4-15 overall.

GAME 1 | Virginia Union 10, Shaw 2

The Lady Bears struggled in the first game, falling by final score of 10-2.

Freshman Syhia Marks (2-8) started and took the loss in the circle for Shaw.

Freshman Ayania Williams led the way offensively for the Lady Bears, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with an RBI. Sophomore D'Amani Gadson put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bears got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Shaw scored one run on Williams' single. The Lady Bears were unable to hold the lead, as Virginia Union scored 10 times over the remaining four innings to grab the 10-2 win.

GAME 2 | Shaw 19, Virginia Union 12

Sophomore D'Amani Gadson collected four hits to help propel the Shaw Lady Bears past Virginia Union 19-12.

Gadson (1-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Shaw. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up 12 runs, six earned, on 10 hits, allowing four walks and striking out six.

In addition to her four hits, Gadson had a walk and two RBIs to lead the Lady Bears. Freshman Ayania Williams put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. Sophomore Sas'Kia Stephens also contributed for Shaw, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bears scored in six different innings on the way to the win. After holding the lead three different times earlier in the ballgame, Shaw broke a 7-7 tie and took the lead for good at 8-7 in the fifth inning. Big hits for the Bears in the inning were a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Nataya Truitt and a two-run single from freshman Virginia Ollison.

» The 19 runs are a season high for the Lady Bears.
