Shaw Trounces Livingstone 22-7, Finishes 1-1 On Day Two Of CIAA Roundup

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --Senior Sas'Kia Stephens racked up four RBIs to help propel the Shaw Lady Bears over the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears 22-7 Friday on the second day of the CIAA Roundup at South Park Complex.

Earlier Friday, the Lady Bears fell to Winston-Salem State 10-2.

Freshman Ayania Williams (1-0) got the win for Shaw (2-2 CIAA, 2-11 Overall). The right-hander went five innings, giving up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits, allowing five walks and striking out four.

Stephens went 2-for-5 for four RBIs for the Lady Bears. Williams furnished a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and three RBIs. Freshman Olivia Ankrom also helped out for Shaw, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a triple, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. LIVINGSTONE

The Lady Bears got on the board immediately in the first inning. Shaw's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including a two-run single off the bat of junior Krystal Walker and a two-run single from Stephens.

The Lady Blue Bears then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 7-3 until the Lady Bears expanded their advantage in the second. Shaw scored a run when Ankrom drew a walk that scored Williams, which brought the Lady Bears lead to 8-3.

Shaw held Livingstone scoreless before building their lead to 10-3 the following inning. The Lady Bears recorded two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Williams.

The Lady Blue Bears gained ground, closing the gap to 10-5 until Shaw added some insurance in the fourth. The Lady Bears scored seven runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Stephens, bringing the Shaw advantage to 17-5.

Livingstone got within 17-7 until the Lady Bears scored again in the fifth inning to stretch its lead to 22-7. The Shaw offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of sophomore D'Amani Gadson. The score remained 22-7 for the rest of the game, as the Lady Bears coasted to the win.

» Sophomore Nataya Truitt had three base hits in the game for Shaw.

Trailing 2-0, the Lady Bears pushed across two runs in the second inning. Winston-Salem State then scored eight times over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 10-2 win.
