BALTIMORE, MD -- The Shaw men's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench, but fell 58-53 to the Fayetteville State Broncos in the CIAA Tournament quarterfinals at CFG Bank Arena Wednesday.
The Bears (16-14) had two players score in double figures, led by Shayne Siago, who had 13 points. Jason Robinson tacked on 13 points and Jamari Roberts added four points and nine rebounds.
Led by Roberts' five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 14 Fayetteville State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Siago's one steal led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-3, Shaw went on a 10-0 run with 16:47 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Jeremiah Pope, to take a 13-7 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 24-23 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.
Fayetteville State proceeded to take a 43-35 lead before Shaw went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Siago's layup, to seize a 45-43 lead with 5:43 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 15-8 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 58-53 loss. Shaw capitalized on five Fayetteville State turnovers in the second half, collecting nine points off those turnovers.
