ELIZABETH CITY, NC -- The Shaw men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 70-60 win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings on the road Saturday in the regular season finale.
The Bears (15-13, 8-8 CIAA) had four players score in double figures, led by Jamari Roberts, who had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Amir Waddell tacked on 15 points and seven rebounds and Jeremiah Pope helped out with 14 points.
Led by Roberts' five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Elizabeth City State to only 19 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 33.8 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 28-22, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 2:15 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Waddell, to take a 31-28 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 31 points.
Shaw started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Roberts' layup, to grow the lead to 38-28 with 15:25 to go in the contest. The Bears held on to that lead for the rest of the game for the 70-60 win. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 39 points in the lane.
