Siago's buzzer-beater leads Shaw over West Virginia State University 68-67

DUNBAR, WV --Shayne Siago knocked down a buzzer-beating shot as time expired to lead the Shaw men's basketball team over the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 68-67 on the road Saturday.

The Bears (1-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Siago, who had 16 points. Amir Waddell added 14 points and two steals off of the bench and Denari Garrett helped out with 10 points.

The Shaw offense was able to grab 12 boards and turned them into nine second chance points.

The Shaw defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 17 West Virginia State University turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Trent McIntyre led the way individually for the Bears with three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 2-0, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 18:37 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Garrett, to take a 6-2 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 34-31.

West Virginia State University kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 55-51 advantage before Shaw went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Siago's layup, to seize a 58-55 lead with 6:23 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still held on for the 68-67 win. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 37 points in the lane.
