DURHAM, NC -- Shaw fell 41-20 to Winston-Salem State at home Saturday afternoon inside of Durham County Memorial Stadium in a game that featured heavy downpours for most of the first quarter.Â
The Rams improved to 3-4 on the year and 3-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, while the Bears fell to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in conference matchups.
Silas Cruse led Shaw's passing attack with 192 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Jatoine Fields totaled 49 yards to lead the Bears' ground attack in the game, picking up 8.2 yards per carry along the way.
Jay Boyd showed out for the Shaw defense, totaling seven tackles and one interception.Mark Shannon added four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack and had in the loss.
Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Winston-Salem passing attack, holding the Rams to 195 yards through the air.
How It Happened
Shaw scored first with 13:07 remaining in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead.Winston-Salem then scored the next 24 points to take a 24-6 lead into the half before the Bears put a touchdown on the board to close the gap and make it a 34-13 game early in the fourth quarter.Â
Winston-Salem scored to increase their lead to 41-13 before Shaw responded with 3:00 remaining in the fourth quarter and closed the gap to 41-20. Neither team scored again in the game.
