RALEIGH, NC --Â The Shaw women's basketball team held Winston-Salem State to just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-12 shooting performance, but fell 56-43 to the Rams at a packed historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday.
Tanayja London led the Bears (8-8, 1-3 CIAA) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Randria Anderson added nine points and five assists and Desire Short chipped in four points and three steals off the bench.
Brittiney Seymour pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into three second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Winston-Salem to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 34.6 percent from the field. The Rams did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed six second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-0, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 8:34 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Anderson, to take a 5-4 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-10.
Shaw then cut the Rams lead to 22-15 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Madjiguene Pene, to narrow its deficit to 22-20. Winston-Salem State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Bears trailing 32-22 heading into halftime.
Shaw came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 32-27 with 6:13 to go in the third. Winston-Salem State countered and stretched its lead to 46-32 heading into the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
Winston-Salem State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 50-32 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, finished off by London's layup, to shrink the deficit to 50-38 with 4:16 to go in the contest. Winston-Salem State responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 56-43. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
