Defensive Effort Leads Shaw Past VUL 82-35

Raleigh, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team held Virginia-Lynchburg to just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in a 3-for-18 shooting performance on the way to an 82-35 win at historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Monday.

The Lady Bears (6-7) had four players score in double figures, led by Brittiney Seymour, who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Randria Anderson added 16 points and two steals and Makenzie Pollard helped out with 13 points.

The Shaw defense held shooters to only 24.4 percent from the field overall. VUL did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as the Dragons grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored zero second-chance points while Shaw pulled down 36 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After playing to a 3-3 tie early in the game, Shaw went on a 19-0 run with 9:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Inari Jones, to take a 22-3 lead. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 25-9 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 25 points.

Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 3:53 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 40-18. VUL cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 40-20 advantage heading into halftime.

Following intermission, Shaw continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 54-27 before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Tanashia Hairston, to expand its lead further to 64-27 with 52 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 24 points in the paint.

Shaw started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Desire Short's three, to grow the lead to 76-27 with 4:15 to go in the contest. VUL narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 82-35 win.
