Late Miscues Doom Bears in Season Opener

Box Score

Durham, NC - In a game that was closer than the final score indicates, the Shaw University Bears (0-1) were unable to capitalize on three turnovers which would prove costly as a late fumble helped seal the game for the visiting Wingate University (1-0) Bulldogs 21-7 Saturday evening inside Durham County Memorial Stadium.

How It Happened

1st Quarter

Shaw opened the game with a three and out before the Bears defense stopped Wingate on a 4th and 3 situation. The second Shaw drive ended after a few penalties stopped a potential drive at midfield. Wingate then took advantage of a few Shaw penalties and found the endzone on 3rd and goal with 3:05 left in the quarter to go ahead 7-0.  The Bears needed little time striking back as Christian Peters found a streaking Ah'Shaan Belcher from 32 yards out to tie the game at 7-7 just before the quarter break.

2nd Quarter

After punts from both teams, Shaw came away with a needed interception from freshman Elijah Wilson and returned it back to the 50-yard line. The Bears were unable to turn the turnover into points but again stopped the Bulldogs on 4th down on the following possession. The Bears again forced a turnover as Wilson came away with his second career interception in his collegiate debut. The Bears drove inside the 30 but would come away empty sending the score to the half still tied at 7-7.

3rd Quarter

The turnovers continued as Jaden Clark intercepted a Wingate pass to open the second half. Neither offense proposed a true threat the remainder of the quarter keeping the score at 7-7.

4th Quarter

Wingate opened the quarter after a Shaw punt and took a deep shot that paid off as the Bulldogs scored on a 55-yard pass play to go ahead 14-7 after the PAT with just two seconds gone in the fourth. After coming up with a needed stop inside the 10-minute mark, the Bears fumbled inside their own 15-yard line. Wingate quickly turned the miscue into points making the Shaw deficit 21-7 with over 8 minutes. The Bears put together another drive inside the 10 but another miscue forced fourth and long and the Bulldogs held to put the game on ice.
