The Bears

Shaw (1-2, 1-0 CIAA) enters Saturday's contest winners of the previous contest in a hard-fought comeback 17-14 win over the defending CIAA champion Bowie State University Bulldogs also at home. Shaw fought back from 7-0 and 14-10 deficits to get the go-ahead score from Sidney Gibbs with 36 seconds left. The Shaw defense came away with one last stop needed intercepting a BSU pass in the endzone as time expired handing the Bulldogs their first CIAA loss since 2017. Shaw was outgained in total yards but won the important turnover and special team battles to come away with the program's first win over a ranked opponent. On the season, Christian Peters leads Shaw in passing starting all three games so far totaling 570 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Peters has completed 53.5 % of his passes. Gibbs leads the Bears three-headed monster attack with 170 yards and two scores. Jatoine Fileds has been a bright spot in the running game and on special teams while having the Bears longest rush of the season so far of 33 yards. Ah'shaan Belcher and Jon Barnes have become quite the random on the outside with Belcher collecting 13 receptions for 272 yards and one score while Barnes has added 11 catches for 145 and two scores including one in the last two games each.

Reigning CIAA Defensive Back of the Week Akeythio Carson has been all over the field on defense leading the Bears with 21 total tackles. Four tackles for loss and one interception. Kareem Butler follows with 19 tackles in just two games played. Safety Jay Boyd has also added 16 tackles and one pass breakup. Eight different Bears have registered double-digit tackles so far this season.

Elizabeth City State

The Vikings (1-2, 1-0 CIAA) are also coming off a comeback victory as they defeated Winston-Salem State 20-17 last Saturday in Elizabeth City, NC. The Vikings overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to score all 20 points in the second half including 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. Previously, ECSU has losses to Livingstone (19-0) and Benedict College (58-14) to open the 2022 season. The Vikings have used three different signal callers so far with freshman Tesean Jones having the most recent success. Darian King leads with 95 yards on the ground while Zion Riddick has collected 108 yards including a 75 yard TD last Saturday in the Vikings win against WSSU. Juan Majette leads all ECSU tacklers with 26 total.
