RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc (5 of 10) on the way to a 92-48 non-conference win over Virginia-Lynchburg at historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Friday. The win is the fourth in a row for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bears (4-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Brittiney Seymour, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Tanashia Hairston added 15 points and two steals off the bench and Tanayja London chipped in 13 points and two steals.
Shaw out-rebounded VUL 54-25, paced by Inari Jones' 10 boards. The Lady Bears also collected 17 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points.
The Shaw defense held VUL shooters to just 31.2 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range. The Lady Bears also held SaNai Hairston-Willi to 3-of-16 shooting and eight points. The Dragons did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points while Shaw pulled down 37 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 16-6 advantage, Shaw went on a 13-0 run with 3:46 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Madijguene Pene, to increase its lead to 29-6. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 29-9 advantage. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 29 points close to the basket.
Shaw built its first quarter lead to 40-17 before going on a 16-0 run starting at the 5:53 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 56-17. The Lady Bears kept their lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 58-19 advantage heading into halftime.
Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from London, to expand its lead further to 65-23 with 8:10 to go in the third period. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 73-30 edge. Shaw knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 15 total points.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Alondra Jordan's layup, to grow the lead to 86-42 with 3:03 to go in the contest. The Lady Bears held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 92-48 win.
