Big games from Pope, Thomas not enough in Shaw's 65-47 loss to Tuskegee

ATLANTA, Forbes Arena --Jeremiah Pope and DJ Thomas combined to score 30 total points, but the Bears fell to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers 65-47 at Saturday.

The Bears (1-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Pope, who had 16 points and two steals. Thomas added 14 points, four assists and two steals and Jamari Roberts added five points and seven rebounds.

Led by Caleb Simmons's four offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in five second chance points.

Shaw forced 18 Tuskegee turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into 25 points on the other end of the floor.  


How It Happened

Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 31-24 heading into halftime.

After intermission, Shaw kept the Golden Tigers from increasing their lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Izeah Parker's layup, to even the score at 40 all with 12:11 to go in the contest. The Bears could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Golden Tigers outscored them 25-7 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 65-47 loss. Shaw capitalized on seven Tuskegee turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.

» The Bears held the Golden Tigers to only 38.3 percent shooting from the field.
» Jeremiah Pope and DJ Thomas carried the load for the Bears, accounting for 64 percent their points.
» The Shaw defense forced 18 turnovers.
» Shaw cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game.
» Shaw got a team-high seven rebounds from Jamari Roberts.

Shaw returns to action Tuesday, November 21 as the Bears make a stop in Sumter, SC to take on Morris College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
