FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Shaw fell 28-20 to Fayetteville State on the road Saturday afternoon ending all chances of the Bears advancing to the CIAA Championship game in Salem, VA.
The Broncos improved to 7-2 on the year and 6-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, while the Bears fell to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in conference matchups.
Sidney Gibbs paced the Bears rushing attack by accumulating 77 yards and two touchdowns over the course of the game, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. also added 58 yards and one touchdown on the ground, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
reeled in three catches for 36 yards.
Keshaun Denham showed out for the Shaw defense, totaling 13 tackles, 2.0 TFL, and one interception.
Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Fayetteville State offensive attack, holding the Broncos to 319 total yards.
How It Happened
Shaw responded to an early 14-0 Fayetteville State lead with a second quarter touchdown to narrow the deficit to 14-7.After Fayetteville State scored to expand its lead to 21-7, the Bears got on the scoreboard again to narrow the gap and make it a 21-14 game.
After Fayetteville State scored to increase its lead to 28-14, Shaw responded with a touchdown with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter lead to cut the deficit to 28-20. Neither team scored again in the game.
