Bears Claw Lions In CIAA Opener 41-6

Box Score

Coatesville, PA – The Shaw University football team used a big second half to pull away for their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) victory on the road defeating the Lincoln Lions 41-6 Saturday afternoon inside Coatesville Memorial Stadium.

With the victory, Shaw improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA. Lincoln drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in CIAA action.

The Shaw defense continued to play at a high level having allowed just six points in the last eight quarters of play while also holding Lincoln to minus one yards rushing during the contest. The Bears outgained the Lions 424-167. Shaw's rushing attack finished with over 200 yards for the second straight week.

Lincoln scored on the opening drive connecting on a 31-yard field goal with 9:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears wasted little time responding with a 7 play 70-yard drive ending in a three-yard Andre Brandon, Jr. touchdown run. The PAT was no good putting Shaw ahead 6-3 at the 6:19 mark in the first.  Shaw forced another Lincoln punt followed by a Bears turnover on fourth down leaving the score at 6-3 after one.

Brandon Jr., found the end zone for the second time in the half from one yard out on a short five-play drive putting Shaw ahead 13-3 with 10:15 left in the second stanza. Shaw put an end to another Lincoln drive with an interception by Akeythio Carson but were unable to turn it into point punting near midfield. Both teams proceeded to trade punts until another Shaw turnover set Lincoln up with a short field where they added a short field goal to trim the Bears lead to 13-6 at the half.

The Bears got off to a great second-half start thanks to Brandon Jr, who returned the opening kickoff up to the 45-yard line and capped off the scoring drive finding the end zone for his third score from 14 yards out. The PAT was good padding the Shaw lead to 20-6 with less than two minutes gone in the third. The Shaw running attacked added to their impressive day with a two-yard score from Sidney Gibbs who carried the load on the drive. Byrd added the PAT making the score 27-6 with 1:24 left in the third period.

The passing game was not to be forgotten about as Peters threw a complete beautiful corner pass to Allajah Mitchell from 31 yards out, putting the Bears ahead 34-6 early in the final stanza. Tevin Perry put a cap on the scoring for the game with an 11-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth bringing the final score to 41-6 and sealing the Shaw conference win.

Brandon Jr., led the Bears rushing attack with 79 total yards and 3 scores.  Gibbs followed with 60 yards and one touchdown. Peters finished the contest 13-24 for 188 yards and one touchdown pass. Nine different Shaw players caught passes. Devon Hunt and Keyon Tyson led the Shaw charge on defense with six tackles each. James Simon and Javari Burgess were credited with tackles for loss.

Shaw returns to action as they travel to VUU for another pivotal CIAA cross-division matchup. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Richmond, VA.
