Box Score Mt. Olive, NC - With revenge on their minds, the Shaw University volleyball team gave a valiant effort coming back from two sets down to force a fifth and final set before falling to the UMO Trojans 3-2 Tuesday evening inside Kornegay Arena in Mt. Olive, NC.
The first set started out even before Shaw was able to push ahead with leads of 10-7 and 14-8. The Trojans battled back to cut the Lady Bears lead to 14-13 before tying the set at 16. UMO remained in control the remainder of the set leading 21-18 and closing out the set for the 25-19 win.
Set two's score mirrored the opening set with UMO winning 25-19. The Trojans led the entire set. Shaw tied the set at 10 before a Trojan run ensued making the score 19-13 in favor of UMO. The Lady Bears were able to trim their deficit to three at 22-19 which led to a 3-0 run from the Trojans pushing the UMO lead to 2-0.
The Lady Bears found a spark during the third set pushing ahead 7-3 only to see their lead slip away and see themselves trailing 16-13. Determined to not fall in straight sets, Shaw put together an extended run to cut the UMO lead to 20-19 before tying the set at 22 then finishing the set at 25-23 with an error from UMO making the score 2-1.
Set four was a back-and-forth affair with scores tied at seven and 11 before Shaw built a 20-17 cushion. The Lady Bears controlled the rest of the set heading to a 25-21 win tying the score at 2-2.
Shaw's magical comeback vanished during the final set as the Lady Bears found themselves trailing early 6-2 shifting the momentum to the host. Shaw trimmed the UMO lead to 9-8 before the Trojans won the final set on a 6-1 run to come away with the thrilling five-set victory.
Paige Worden paced the Lady Bears with 14 kills for the match. Kamille Patrick followed with 11. Breelyn Clark led Shaw with 33 assists. Jessica Kelly led the digs department with 20. Clark and Worden also added 11 digs each.
The Lady Bears return to the court Thursday, September 23 as they open CIAA action as they travel to Lincoln (PA). First serve is set for 6 p.m.
