Box Score Ettrick, VA – The Shaw University volleyball extended their hot streak to six straight matches after defeating the Virginia State University Trojans 3-1 (25-23,25-19,18-25,25-21) Thursday evening inside the VSU Multi-Purpose Center.
With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 7-4 overall and 6-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Trojans now sit at 7-7 overall and fall to 5-1 in CIAA action. The loss ends VSU's five-match winning streak.
Shaw was led on offense by Mallory Brown finishing with 15 kills. Kamille Patrick and Paige Worden followed with eight and seven kills respectively. Setter Breelyn Clark finished with 33 assists. The Lady Bears offense finished with a .171 hitting percentage. Shaw finished the match with 14 service aces. Jessica Kelley paced Shaw with 22 digs defensively while Worden followed with 10.
Ambria McBride and Helena Eubanks topped the Trojans with 10 kills each. Najlaa Williams and McBride led VSU in digs with 13 and 12 each.
The first set remained close with the score tied at 16 before Shaw pulled ahead 20-17 before closing out the set at 25-23. VSU jumped ahead 3-0 early into the second set before a Shaw rally made the score 8-5 in favor of the Lady Bears. After VSU tied the score at 12, Shaw went ahead 22-15 followed by the Lady Bears winning the second set 25-20. VSU pushed ahead 11-8 after Shaw saw their 8-6 lead slip away. The Trojans led the rest of the set trimming the Shaw lead to 2-1 after winning the third set 25-18.
VSU took the momentum from the third set win pulling ahead 10-5 in the fourth set. A Shaw timeout led to a response from the Lady Bears trimming the VSU lead to 11-10. Trailing 21-20 with the Trojans looking to send the match into a fifth and deciding set, Shaw closed the set on a 5-0 run clinching the 3-1 win and their sixth straight overall.
Shaw returns to action with another road CIAA matchup on Monday, October 11 as the Lady Bears face the Bowie State University Bulldogs. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside A.C. Jordan Arena
