Bowie, MD – The Shaw University volleyball team saw their winning streak climb to seven straight matches as the Lady Bears defeated the Bowie State University Bulldogs 3-0 Monday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
With the win, Shaw improves to 8-4 overall, 7-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action, and alone in first place in the Northern Division at 4-0. Bowie State falls to 1-13 on the season and now sits at 0-7 in the CIAA and 0-4 in the Northern Division.
Shaw took control of the first set after a 7-7 tie reeling off five straight points to go ahead 12-7. The Lady Bears lead grew to as big as 21-10 before a service error on BSU sealed the opening set 25-15 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair to begin with the lead changing sides multiple times before Shaw pushed ahead 13-11. The Bulldogs responded to tie the set at 16-16 before Shaw went out in front 21-18. BSU fought back trimming the Lady Bears lead to just 22-21 before a Shaw run closed out the set at 25-21 making the score 2-0 in favor of the Lady Bears.
The final stanza was all Shaw from the first serve as the Lady Bears jumped out to leads of 13-3 and 20-9. Shaw wasted little time closing out the sweep winning the third set 25-12 sending the Lady Bears to their seventh straight win.
On the match, Shaw held BSU to a .165 hitting percentage while the Lady Bears finished at .316. Amari Earl and Kamille Patrick paced Shaw with 8 kills each. Breelyn Clark topped the Bears in assists with 18. Jessica Kelley tallied 11 digs on the match while Kaylin Evans followed with 9.
Shaw returns to the court this weekend in Petersburg, VA at the CIAA Round-Up held at the VSU Multi-Purpose Center. On October 16, the Lady Bears will face rival St. Augustine's University Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by Livingstone College at 5 p.m. Shaw will then battle Fayetteville State University on October 17 in a rematch of the 2019 CIAA Championship match. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
