LADY BEARS ADVANCE TO FIFTH-STRAIGHT SEMIFINALS WITH 3-0 WIN OVER ELIZABETH CITY STATE

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the fifth-consecutive season, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will appear in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Volleyball Semifinals after sweeping the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University, 3-0 Tuesday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Shaw rolled to the victory by the scores 25-19, 25-15 and 25-7 to keep its 2019 season alive at 16-9 overall while ECSU's season comes to an end at 9-17 for 2019. With tonight's victory, Shaw will face the No. 1 seeded Trojans of Virginia State on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. in Salem, Va.

The first two sets were close between both teams as Shaw trailed 18-15 but the Lady Bears rallied back to produce 4-0 run to take a 22-17 stand before closing out the frame with back-to-back points on the Lady Vikings miscues for the 1-0 lead.

Despite a close second set, the Lady Bears outhit ECSU 18-5 in the second set on 13-of-19 attempts while planting eight-straight points to build a 20-14 lead, forcing the Lady Vikings to call a timeout but that did no justice as Shaw mounted a 5-1 spread for the set win and 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Shaw opened the flood gates on the Lady Vikings sparking a 15-4 surge. After a kill from Alexus Elliott snapped the scoring drought for ECSU, the Lady Bears used a 10-2 and never looked back to cruise to the 3-0 sweep and quarterfinal round victory.

Three Lady Bears posted in double figure kills led by senior and All-CIAA Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) with 13 and four digs while both seniors and All-CIAA recipients Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) and Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) chipped in 11 kills apiece. Shaw's offensive attack was directed by sophomore and the CIAA's setter of the year, Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) with 35 assists while Butler led the Lady Bears defensively with a team-high five digs.
